The-horizon radar "Аrch" - a radar station was established in the USSR for the early detection of launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles at the start outbreaks (based on the reflection of radiation of the ionosphere). Construction of the station at Chernobyl was completed in 1985. After the events of April 26, 1986 the station was frozen and operation stopped due to possible damage to electronic equipment.
For the characteristic sound of the air, published in the paper (tap) was named Russian Woodpecker. Height of station near Chernobyl of about 150 meters, length 800 meters.
Known as a minimum of three stations: in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, in the Chernobyl area and the pilot plant near Nikolayev. Currently, none of them is not functioning.
